The only naturally occurring isotope of thorium is 232 Th and it is unstable and radioactive. According to Adams and Gasparini (1970) thorium is chemically stable in the tetravalent ion state under reducing conditions, has a large ionic radii, a high coordination number (8) with Thorium (chemical symbol Th) is a naturally occurring radioactive metal found at trace levels in soil, rocks, water, plants and animals. Thorium is solid under normal conditions. There are natural and man-made forms of thorium, all of which are radioactive.

For at thorium-232 skal kunne brukes i en reaktor må det omvandles til den fisjonerbare nukliden uran-233, dette gjøres ved å sette inn et ekstra nøytron i thorium-232. Thorium entering the bloodstream will become stored in the bone marrow, but the majority will become lodged in the kidney, which is the major site of toxicity.
